So, I was hoping a kind soul here would save me some gray hairs. I'm at a loss, I have no idea what the problem may be, and so far I haven't found anything out there that sufficiently describes my problem. I've also tried capturing from my webcam just to see if I can capture, but VLC hangs and I have to kill it. I believe video1 must be the DVC-100, but I can get no picture on screen from it, nor capture anything to file. video0 is apparently my webcam, as my own pretty face shows up when I try to stream from that device. There I have two choices for video devices, /dev/video0 og /dev/video1. However, I seem unable to get it working. Some way down the road I've switched to Linux Mint 17, and according to different forums, it should be possible to capture video in Linux from the DVC-100, using VLC. However, my hard drive broke down, and I lost some of the videos. Back in 2012, I bought Pinnacle studio and the Dazzle DVC-100 video capture unit to achieve this. I've been working to digitalize some old family vids on VHS.
